DMA Wins Energy Saving Award 2023

Hospital and Health Service Project of the Year

Rye, Winchelsea, & District Memorial Hospital

We’re incredibly pleased to announce that our work at Rye, Winchelsea, & District Memorial Hospital has earned us the Energy Saving Award 2023 for Hospital and Health Service Project of the Year. We’re proud of this achievement and appreciate the recognition of our determined efforts in energy saving.

This project has been an intensive group effort, led by Kevin Mcguane, alongside Martin Richards and Matt Warne, overseeing the outstanding Energy & Sustainability team at DMA Group. Their expertise in energy services and commitment to creating sustainable solutions has been instrumental in making this project a success. We’ve transformed Rye Hospital into the UK’s first carbon-neutral community hospital, a feat that we’re greatly proud of and which marks a significant milestone for the entire healthcare sector.

This remarkable accolade is a testament to the collective effort of each and every person at DMA Group. From our skilled and dedicated engineers and designers to our diligent administrative and support staff, every role played a significant part in the successful realisation of this extraordinary project.

Serving our customers and helping them to achieve better always make us feel very proud at DMA Group. We’ve worked with the Trustees and management team at Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital since the early 1990s and we’ve built a strong mutually trusting relationship.

In 2021, DMA conducted a thorough energy audit of the hospital’s facilities. Based on our findings, we predicted that a remarkable 98% reduction in their carbon footprint could be achieved through various activities outlined in our advisory recommendations. These included, but not limited to, LED lighting, fan motor upgrades, and solar PV installation. These efforts resulted in significant energy savings, enhanced resilience, and a 100% reduction in carbon emissions, making it the first UK community hospital to achieve the milestone of carbon neutrality: the equivalent of planting 4,300 trees!

Barry Nealon, chairman at Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital, said: “Our goal was always to become a fully functional net zero community hospital, but to have done it so quickly and as the UK’s first is beyond our expectations.  We had a mission to bring medical services closer to home for the benefit of our local community. To achieve this, we needed to reimagine our existing business models and aim for sustainable growth and a collaborative and experienced service partner like DMA Group to realise those goals, if we were to do our bit in curbing emissions and limiting global warming.”

“This Energy Saving Award is a recognition of our relentless pursuit of exceptional performance and environmental sustainability. We are continuously committed to driving innovation and delivering bespoke solutions that not only meet but exceed our customers’ expectations. The success achieved at Rye and Winchelsea Hospital is a testament to our approach. We’re incredibly proud to have been part of the journey, transforming the hospital into the UK’s first community hospital to fully reduce its carbon footprint. This award fuels our determination to continue pushing the boundaries in sustainable energy management.” – Andrew Wood, CEO, DMA.

“This UK national award recognises the initial foresight of the Trustees at Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital, which fuelled the opportunity to decarbonise. Alongside the hard work, innovation, and dedication of our talented energy services and project management teams, we made it happen.” – Steve McGregor, MD, DMA
