Celebrating 220 years in 2023
We’re proudly celebrating our 220 years anniversary this year. We’re one of the oldest businesses in the UK, and our legacy is a source of deep pride. DMA Group have come a long way since 1803 and has grown to become a leader in the facilities management industry in the UK. Over the years, DMA Group has weathered many challenges and has adapted to changes in the industry, whilst always remaining committed to the core values of teamwork, respect, and quality.
In 1803 George III was on the throne of England, Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth was Prime Minister, Napoleon declared war on England…. and George Henry Denne bought a barrow!
G H Denne grew from humble beginnings into a renowned provider of construction and property services. In 1859 a directory listed ‘G.H. Denne’ as a builder and farmer, then in 1887 Kelly’s Directory listed ‘G.H. Denne and Sons’ as Builder, Contractor and Funeral Directors – coffin-making was the beginnings of our joinery business!
A century of growth and expansion
Our then construction services business led the way by designing, constructing and maintaining many buildings across London and the Southeast for banks, healthcare, education residential and commercial buildings, including the design, installation and maintenance of all the mechanical, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, drainage and specialist technical services too. We’re proud to say that many of our cherished customers have been with us for many years.
The birth of DMA
In 2003 Denne Maintenance implemented a leading edge technology system to computerise the management and scheduling of our field based service engineers using handheld devices. In 2006, the c.£80m pa Denne Construction business was sold to the Dutch company Heijmans NV, as part of its expansion into the UK. As a result, DMA Group was born through the retention of our Denne Joinery, M&E installations and building maintenance businesses. This included the retention of a 30 year PFI contract for the upkeep and maintenance of 17 residential care homes across the Southeast.
2007 to present
During 2007 to 2013, our M&E installation business grew serving large builders and main contractors across London. We withdrew from that sector in 2014 to focus on building owners, occupiers and managers. 2015 saw our transformation into an integrated life of building service provider, with significant investment in technology and our leadership team. In 2016 we began developing our own digital service management platform, called BiO®. In 2018 Graham Tong retired after 50 years of service. In 2020 we launched our Energy Service team to support our customers towards Net Zero. On 1st Jan 2022 we secured a c.£6m pa maintenance and project services agreement with the Port of Dover, so powered by our expertise and our technology we’re making buildings work better and changing the UK maintenance industry, for good.
